Island Life Calling:

Our Top 5 Mallorca Must-Do’s

(Part One)

Now that we’ve dissected the “why” and “where” of our Mallorca dreams in the previous two posts (if you missed them, catch up [here] and [here]), it’s time for the what. What Mallorcan adventures are we most eager to experience? Which lesser-known outings are calling our names? And naturally, which ensaimadas are we most tempted to devour?

Alright, confession time: my Mallorca bucket list is spiraling out of control. I’ve got more must-try experiences than the island has beaches (and that’s saying something).

In this two-parter, I’m diving headfirst into all the cala-hopping, tapas-tasting, and culture-soaking adventures that have us counting down the days until wheels up. From scouring markets for local delicacies to stargazing from mountain peaks, we’re on a mission to uncover Mallorca’s most magical moments.

“The gladdest moment in human life, me thinks, is a departure into unknown lands.”

Sir Richard Burton

If you’re like my wife, you may be dreaming of days spent hopping between calas (coves) and nights filled with tapas and laughter. Or perhaps, like my son, you’re eager to uncover the island’s musical soul, guitar in hand. No matter your Mallorca fantasy, this post is your preview into the experiences we can’t wait to have.

So, pour yourself a glass of vino, settle in, and join us as we unveil the Mallorcan experiences we can’t wait to try!

Experiences in Cala d’Or and Palma: A Taste of Island Life

As a quick reminder, we’re a family of three – me (Aaron), my wife, and our teenage son – and we’re on a mission to find our perfect second home abroad. Right now, we have our eyes set on Mallorca.

We’re not just looking for a vacation spot. We’re seeking a place where we can connect with the local community, somewhere we can genuinely thrive (as individuals and as a family); someplace that feels like home.

First stop on our top Mallorca experiences list: Cala d’Or and Palma. We’re about to dive into a world of cove-hopping by day (because who needs just one perfect beach?), and cultural discoveries and tapas-crawling by night.

Fair warning: side effects may include perpetual grins, an unshakeable desire to move to Spain, and a newfound addiction to ensaimadas.

#1: Exploring Calas: A Coastal Adventure  🏊‍♂️

Swimming, Hiking, and Beachside Dining Around Cala d’Or

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”

Jacques Cousteau

Mallorca’s southeastern coast is a gold mine of calas, each uniquely beautiful.

Our game plan?

Set up camp in Cala d’Or and spend our days bouncing between these natural wonders like a band of carefree castaways. We’re talking azure waters so clear you can count the pebbles beneath, just tempting you to toss the itinerary (and your sunglasses) and dive right in.

Cala d’Or and Just Northward: Our Home Base Adventures

We’re looking forward to swimming in the calm waters of Cala Gran and snorkeling through the mesmerizing underwater world of Cala Esmeralda. We also can’t wait to perfect our sunbathing ritual on the soft sands of Cala Serena and Cala Ferrera.

But it’s not only about lounging on the beach (though, come on, that’s a huge part of it). We’ll also strap on our hiking boots and tackle the scenic coastal trails that weave between these isolated coves. One such trail leads to Cala Mitjana, an exceptional slice of tranquility that promises unparalleled peace and quiet. After that hike, we plan to treat ourselves to a rewarding pa amb oli and tinto de verano at the chiringuito in nearby Cala Sa Nau.

Just South of Cala d’Or: Beach-Hopping Our Way to Bliss

And we’re just warming up! We also look forward to venturing further south to uncover the picture-perfect Cala des Moro; making time along the trek to check out Cala Mondragó, Cala S’Amarador, Cala Llombards, and Cala Santanyí.

I might even channel my inner daredevil and try some cliff jumping  – assuming my wife’s voice of reason (and knowing eye rolling) doesn’t keep me anchored to solid ground.

With so many calas to choose from, we could really use your help and expert advice. Which ones have stolen your hearts? Are there any secret spots we absolutely can’t miss? Share your tips in the comments below!

Evening Escapades in Cala d’Or

Cala d'Or Harbor, Mallorca, Spain

After relaxing days exploring calas, we’ll head back to home base in Cala d’Or to refuel and recharge. The laid-back town seems like a perfect spot to unwind, with its renowned marina and a tantalizing array of restaurants and bars.

I can already see the sun melting into the Mediterranean, casting golden shimmers on the water, while we prep ourselves for Cala d’Or’s after-dark festivities. Restaurant terraces overlooking the marina being bathed in the soft glow of lanterns, scents of sizzling seafood on open flames mixing into the fragrant night air… all aptly setting the stage for an evening of culinary pleasures.

My wife’s veggie-loving palate is in for a treat – Mallorca’s got enough fresh produce and plant-based dishes to make a carrot blush. I’m talking trampó that’s basically summer in a bowl, and tumbet that could convert even the most devoted carnivore. Meanwhile, I’ll be playing ‘catch of the day’ roulette, possibly with a side of cocarrois (because why not add some Mallorcan pastry to the mix?). And the local wine – I’ll sample it thoroughly. You know, for research purposes.

Later, we’ll wander through the town’s intimate alleyways… maybe follow the subtle sounds of some Spanish guitar and unexpectedly find ourselves in a hidden courtyard bar or luckily land in some cozy tavern that looks like it’s been serving sangria since before Columbus set sail.

We’re all about those ‘open to wherever the night takes us’ type of evenings. After all, our travel scrapbook is full of ‘how did we get here?’ moments that turned into the best stories. We might discover a secret speakeasy, or end up in an impromptu flamenco lesson.

Regardless, we’re excited for some very memorable Cala d’Or evenings – and whatever curveballs they throw our way! ⚾✨

#2: Historical Walks and Tapas Trails in Palma de Mallorca 🏰

Discovering Palma’s Historic Sites and Nightlife

Catedral de Mallorca, Palma de Mallorca

Palma is Mallorca’s cultural epicenter. It draws us in with its layered history and palpable ‘relaxed yet zestful’ joie de vivre type energy.

The city’s like a history book that’s traded in its dusty cover for a pair of dancing shoes – ancient stones rubbing shoulders with animated tapas bars. Kind of like someone took ‘Netflix and chill’ and ‘let’s paint the town red,’ tossed them in a blender, and sprinkled the result all over the city’s twisting streets.

Getting gloriously lost in those alleyways? Definitely on our agenda!

Palma seems like one of those places where you turn one corner and boom – a jaw-dropping piece of architecture. Turn again and, in an instant, you’re transported to a quaint square filled with locals going about their day (offering wonderful glimpses into less touristy, more everyday, Mallorca).

The city’s practically an open-air museum 🏛️, with tangible reminders of its storied past at every turn. La Seu’s imposing Gothic silhouette dominates the skyline, while the ancient Arab Baths and the sprawling Royal Palace of La Almudaina serve as exceptional portals to Mallorca’s centuries-old heritage.

Local Secret We’ve Discovered:

Did you know that twice a year, La Seu cathedral puts on a spectacular light show? On February 2nd and November 11th, the morning sun aligns perfectly to project the image of the central rose window onto the opposite wall, creating a stunning figure-eight of light.

Locals call this ‘El Espectáculo del Ocho’ in Spanish or ‘L’espectacle del vuit’ in Catalan (both meaning ‘The Spectacle of the Eight’). It’s a mesmerizing display of medieval architectural precision that we can’t wait to see!

But Palma isn’t just about old stones and grand monuments. It’s also a city that knows how to celebrate life. As daylight gives way to darkness, we can’t wait to meander through atmospheric neighborhoods like La Lonja and Santa Catalina… most likely on extended tapas adventures, sampling the island’s flavors and letting the local ambiance wash over us.

I look forward to raising many glasses of hierbas to Mallorca’s unique spirit, to its cultural charms, and, hopefully, to a few new friends.

And if we can stumble upon a secret jazz spot or witness an impromptu street performance of Xeremiers, with their distinctive bagpipes and flutes filling a plaza with traditional Mallorcan melodies, all the better!

Culinary Adventures in Palma

“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.”

Virginia Woolf

Palma isn’t just a feast for the eyes; it really is a gastronomic playground.

I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve fallen down a delicious rabbit hole, pouring over mouthwatering images of Mallorcan delicacies.

From Mercat de l’Olivar, overflowing with glistening seafood, sun-ripened produce, and aromatic spices… to charming cafés nestled down quiet lanes with inviting nooks for relishing sobrasada-laden pastries and velvety cortados.… along with all the gourmet eateries that dot the cityscape, my taste buds are definitely tingling in anticipation of Palma’s food scene.

True to form, I’m fired up to try the island’s signature flavors: the rich, spiced sobrasadas (a local sausage I can’t wait to try) and almond-infused gatós d’ametlla, to the hearty and iconic frito mallorquín. Our epicurean journey will span rustic taverns dishing up comforting arròs brut, and innovative Michelin-starred kitchens where local ingredients are transformed into edible art.

I’m poised to dive into the taste-filled exploration, immersing myself in Mallorcan cuisine in all its varied splendor.

 Insider Tip We’ve Unearthed:

In our research, we stumbled upon a winter celebration that’s got us considering a January visit. The ‘Festa de Sant Antoni’, typically held on January 17th, sounds like Mallorca’s answer to the best block party ever.

Locals apparently gather around bonfires, grill sobrasada, and belt out traditional songs. It’s like a Mallorcan barbecue meets karaoke night, and we’re determined to score an invite when we’re there!

But with so many options to choose from, I’m hoping you, dear friends, can help me narrow it down. Where can I find the freshest seafood? Which tapas bars are the local favorites? And most importantly, where can I satisfy my sweet tooth with the most decadent ensaimadas? Your recommendations are sure to make our culinary journey even more delicious!

Cala-Hopping and Tapas Trails: Mallorca’s Must-Try Experiences

Well, guys, it seems I’ve dug myself into an even deeper hole. Cala d’Or and Palma have completely hijacked my imagination, and my Mallorca obsession is getting a bit out of control.

We’ve barely scratched the surface, and I’m already plotting ways to extend our trip (don’t tell my wife… yet).

From playing hide-and-seek with hidden calas to embarking on tapas treasure hunts in centuries-old plazas, these experiences have us daydreaming about Mallorcan life on repeat.

I mean, who wouldn’t want to wake up to the sound of waves, spend the day beach-hopping, and end it with a glass of local wine under the stars? At this rate, I might need to start a support group for Mallorca addicts… or maybe just relocate our entire family.
